This is a very mature specimen. On average, these small trees get to be 8’ tall by 8’ wide.

However, they can be trimmed very easily to keep them shorter or narrower.

If you are looking for a super unique, tough-as-nails focal point tree, stop in and take a look at the Ice Dragons!

🌱 Important Notice to All Gardeners 🌱

We are experiencing an unusually high volume of insect and disease questions this year, affecting a wide range of plants. So far, the most common concerns include Cedar Apple Rust on Serviceberries, Magnolia Scale on Magnolia trees, Spidermites, Aphids and Oystershell Scale on various species.

Observation is Key:
Regularly inspect both new and established plants for any signs of these pests. Early detection is crucial for effective management and can help prevent the spread to other plants.

Sustainable Plant Care:
At Wasco Nursery, we prioritize the health of our ecosystems. We ALWAYS advocate for targeted treatment rather than routine spraying, aligning with our commitment to pollinator safety and environmental stewardship. Many pest issues can be resolved reactively, without pre-emptive chemical measures.

There are noticeably less monarch caterpillars and butterflies. I usually see dozens of caterpillars by this time . Yet this year only 3.

I have a lot of milkweed that has spread over the years. When can I expect to start seeing these caterpillars? Northern IL.

This guy was spotted at the Davis School garden 🐛

With the upcoming heat we have been getting a lot of inquiries about shade trees.

If you are in an area with limited tree canopies, adding some shade trees to your yard can drastically improve the temperature of your yard and home during our hot Illinois summers!

To show a small example of the difference, we left a temperature gauge in the sun, and then moved it to underneath the canopy of our Coffeetree. Even in this small area, there was a temperature difference of 3 degrees! Other areas with larger tree canopies can lower the temperature sometimes up to 10-15 degrees, compared to the same area without trees.

If you are in need of some shade for your yard or home, our nursery is packed full of locally-grown, disease and insect resistant trees!

Stop in this week to take a look at all of the great options available. Please make sure to bring in some photos of the areas you are looking to fill, so that one of our tree experts can help you choose the best tree.

Now is the time of year where we start to get a lot of questions about fungal diseases.

Especially in years where we have wet springs, fungal diseases on mature trees are very common. This week is a great time to take a peek outside and check to see if your trees / shrubs have any signs of fungal diseases.

Though it is not the ideal time to treat for some fungal diseases, there are still some things you can do to help your plants.

If any of your plants have symptoms similar to these photos, bring in a branch sample or photo, and our plant experts can help identify the disease and recommend treatment.

If you are out of state or are not able to bring in photos / samples, check out our Educational Resources page at: www.wasconursery.com/category/plant-issues/

My beautiful magnolia has scale again. I treated it in August and was hopeful but I noticed this week it’s back and my tree is dripping like crazy. Can I treat it again? It’s about 20’ tall, over my pool and deck so it’s in a very tricky area.

We have a tree that possibly has Cedar Apple Rust. Leaves are falling like crazy and branches are sparse. It's too large and too sick to save 😔
