Which Black Beauty blend fits your yard
Walk the lawn at midday and count the hours of direct sun. Black Beauty Original is a straight tall fescue with deep roots, so it holds up in open, sunny yards that bake in July. Black Beauty Ultra blends in Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, which germinate faster and knit thin patches back together. Seeding, watering, and feeding
Late summer into early fall is the strongest seeding window in Northern Illinois. Soil is still warm enough for fast germination, nights cool off, and crabgrass pressure has passed. Rake down to bare soil so seed touches dirt, spread it evenly, and keep the top layer damp with short, frequent watering until you see green. Then water less often and more deeply. Follow with a starter feeding and stay on a program using plant and lawn food or the Espoma organic lawn program. Grass seed questions
When should I plant grass seed in Northern Illinois?
Late summer through early fall is the strongest window. Warm soil speeds germination, cool nights reduce stress, and weed competition has dropped off. Spring seeding works too, but new grass then has to survive its first summer with a shallow root system.
What grass seed works in a shady yard?
Black Beauty Dense Shade is built for it. Use it on the north side of the house and under a heavy tree canopy. If the yard is part sun and part shade, Black Beauty Sun and Shade is the better single bag.
How often do I water new grass seed?
Keep the surface damp, not soaked, until the seed sprouts. That usually means short waterings several times a day. Once the new grass is up and mowable, shift to longer soakings less often so roots chase the water down.
Should I seed or lay sod on a new construction lawn?

Do I need to fertilize when I seed?
Pairing a new seeding with a starter food is common practice. Rates and timing are set by the product label, so read it before you spread anything. Bring us the bag and we can walk through it.
Can I put down weed control and seed at the same time?
No. Most pre emergent weed controls stop grass seed from germinating along with the crabgrass. Handle weeds first, wait out the label interval, then seed.
